This will be the final year of whole-grade sharing with Van Buren for grades 7-12, as we move toward consolidation.  Beginning July 1, 2019 we will join to form the Van Buren County Community School District. 

SIAC - School Improvement Advisory Committee

We are seeking parent and community volunteers from the Harmony district to join with the Van Buren SIAC members.  The committee will meet quarterly this year as we move into a consolidated district.  

The role of the School Improvement Advisory is outlined below:

Iowa Code stipulates that a School Improvement Advisory Committee (SIAC) shall be established to ensure community involvement in:

1. the determination of major educational needs;
2. the determination and prioritization of student learning goals;
3. the provision of long range goals that include, but are not limited to, the state indicators that address reading, mathematics and science achievement;
4. the harassment or bullying prevention goals, programs, training, and other initiatives.

At least annually, the School Improvement Advisory Committee shall make recommendations to the Board of Education with regard to:

1. progress achieved with the annual goals for the state indicators that address, reading, mathematics, and science;
2. progress achieved with locally determined core indicators, and
3. annual improvement goals for the state indicators that address reading, mathematics, and science achievement.

Committee membership shall include students, parents, teachers, administrators, and representatives from the local community. To the extent possible, committee membership has balanced representation of the following: race, gender, national origin, and disability. (Gender balance is defined as half male and half female for even-numbered committees or half plus one for odd-numbered committees.) The Superintendent/ designee shall serve as ex-officio Chair of the Committee.

3 Hour Early-Out Dates:

There will be four 12:20 early dismissals this school year. They are Sept. 26, Dec. 5, Feb. 13 and April 10. These dates were planned in order to have "consolidated" planning and professional learning for Harmony and Van Buren employees.

NO School Board meeting on Oct. 24, 2018.  The next School Board meeting will be Nov. 7, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. ---at the Harmony Elementary Cafeteria.  A Joint Board meeting with Van Buren CSD School Board immediately following.
